PRESENT---

October 9, Westfield, MA--- Well the off-season is here and since I don’t have any insider information to share I will be doing my traditional driver interviews. Now the first driver I will be talking about races in the D.A.R.E Stock at Stafford Motor Speedway and is also a good friend of mine. Don Wood races the #8 R.A.D Auto Machine/JT’s Café car.

Unlike the other drivers in the D.A.R.E Stocks this past season Don started half way through the season. But he is no rookie to the SMS, he had competed there a little over ten years ago. If you ever talk to Don though you will realize that circle track racing didn’t even cross his mind at first.

Don shared with me that he had originally planned on drag racing. That all changed when his buddies didn’t show up to help build the car.

“ I got the loan from the bank and know one showed up to help.”

The next thing that was discussed was what he thought was the best part of racing besides for winning. Don wasted no time at saying that racing side by side. “It’s the excitement that happens when your side by side that I really like.” And talking with Don about the action on the track I can tell that he is out there just to have fun.

And that is Don’s main goal while racing, to have fun.

One of the last topics that were discussed was what driver did Don admire growing up. Don told me that growing up he didn’t follow racing.

And for those who have been to SMS and saw Don race probably didn’t know that he races at Whip City Speedway. He races the #51 2-stroke and was track champion in 2006 and was just crowned track champion this past weekend.

So congratulations go out to Don for being track champion at Whip City Speedway and for finishing in the top 20 in points at Stafford. And good luck next season at both tracks!
