The main attraction of the afternoon was of course the Whelen Modified Tour. Taking the lead at the drop of the green was the #2 of Todd Szegedy. As Szegedy and the others in the top three settled, fourth back battled two by two. By lap six the first yellow flag flew. When the green came back out Szegedy held on to a slim lead over the #4 of Donny Lia. Szegedy though held the lead. Once that battle was settled the field was single file racing.
As the race went on I noticed that after every restart the field was quick to go back to single file racing. It also seemed that single file racing was the theme of whole race.
Szegedy looked like he had the car to beat. But due to a lap fifty seven pit stop, Szegedy was forced to give up the lead. Inheriting the lead was the #59 of Matt Hirschman. After many laps and cautions, Hirschman was finding it hard to pull away from the field.
On a lap eighty three restart, Hirschman was finally challenged for the lead. Challenging the leader was the #16 of Mike Stefanik. Stefanik was finally able to take the lead on lap ninety one. Once in the lead Stefanik never looked back. When the twin checkers flew it was Stefanik taking down the win.
Even though Stefanik won the race it was Donny Lia clinching the Whelen Modified Tour Championship.
In the SK Modifieds, twenty-seven cars take the green flag for a fifty-lap event. Taking an early lead was the #6 of Wade Mattesen. With Mattesen leading the rest of the field was two by two. Then on lap three there was a major battle for the lead. Taking the lead from Mattesen for the first time was the #3 of Jeff Malave, but that only lasted for one turn. Taking it from Malave was the #52 of Woody Pitkat.
As all this was happening I couldn’t help but wonder if the field was too aggressive early on. But they actually proved me wrong. They kept up their hard charging ways untill the very end.
From the time Pitkat took the lead he only lost it for one lap. Who did he loose it to for the one lap? It was to the #13 of TC Ted Christopher.
After many more cautions Pitkat went on to take down the feature win while Christopher took the championship.
Rounding out the 2007 season was the Late Models. Leading at the drop of the green was the #14 of Rick Charette. Charette though held an extremely slim lead over the #4 of Tom Butler. Butler was able to take the lead coming to the start/finish line. Then on lap one the caution flag flew for the first time. When the green came back out it was Butler still leading. But as the race went on the field remained fierce. Making his way through the field quietly though was the #94 of Dillon Moltz. Also running up front was the #92 of Tom Fearn.
And the more this race went on, the more cautions there were. As I was sitting in the Press Box, I was talking to the people around me and we couldn’t believe how long it was taking to complete the race.
By the end of the race it was a battle between Moltz and Fearn battling for the win. When it was all said and done, it was Moltz taking down the win. Taking down the championship though was Corey Hutchings.
Like I had said this weekend wrapped up the 2007 season. I would like to congratulate all the drivers that competed this season at Stafford and the other Connecticut tracks.
Through out the winter I will be posting at least once a month with driver interviews. And if I hear of anything going on with Stafford I will be informing all of you loyal readers.
