PRESENT---

August 18-Westfield, MA--- Before I get into my column I just want to send my condolences out to the family of John Blewett III.

If you read my column on a regular basis, you can say that I love to talk to drivers and see what they have to say. The latest driver that I got to talk to was East Longmeadow, MA's very own Tom Fearn, who drives the #92 Late Model at Stafford Motor Speedway. With two wins on the season, Tom currently sits 8th in the Late Model point standings; only 14 out of the top five and 94 points out of first with the season beginning to wind down.

Every driver that I have talked to has been involved with motorsports for different amounts of time. Tom has been racing for a total of 20 years. 12 of those years have been at SMS.

The next thing that we discussed was Tom’s favorite part of racing. Tom told me that his favorite part is the people that he gets to meet. “Racing is a like a big family.” And I couldn’t agree with him more than that.

“It’s a high, its something to look forward to, its something to work for every week,” is the reason why Tom keeps crawling into his race car every week.

Another topic that was covered was the ownership of a racecar. Tom has owned his own cars in the past. After awhile, Tom decided to drive for other people. He currently drives for Brian Kennedy. You can say that Tom earns his keep by helping maintaining the car. “Everyone volunteers to help with the car.”

When asked if he would ever own his own car again. Tom said that he would, but due to changing times he isn’t in position to do so.

The last thing that Tom and I discussed was giving advise to others. From talking with him I realized that he is one of the most helpful competitors out there. If he sees that someone is struggling to succeed he will go up to them and see what he can do to help.

Even though Tom tries to help others out on the track, there are the few things that neither him or the other driver will tell. Every team has there own “secrets” on how they succeed on the track.

I want to thank Tom for taking time to talk to me about his racing endeavors. And I hope that everyone enjoys seeing a different part of the drivers when there not thanking their sponsors and car-owners even though they are both very important.
