Ted Christopher, Michael O’Sullivan, Glen Reen, Bill Davis and Bill Dunn Take Down Feature Wins at Stafford Motor Speedway
July 8- Westfield, MA--- For those who get to go to Stafford on a regular basis, you probably have noticed a pattern with the SK Modifieds. If you cant make it regularly your probably wondering what I’m talking about. One week the drivers are worse than the rookie classes and then the following week they are so much better. This was on of their better weeks.
When the green dropped it was Kerry Malone in the #81 taking the lead. As Malone jumped out to the lead everyone else battled side by side. With all this happening I was becoming very nervous. By lap four the first of five cautions came out.
On the restart from the first caution was the real test for Malone. He was able to hold a slim lead over the #96 of Curt Brainard and the #84 of Bo Gunning. Not far in fourth was Keith Rocco in the #78. Rocco was able to get past all three cars . When Rocco went for the lead he wasn’t alone, he brought with him Brad Hietala in the #9 machine. Hietala was able to lead for only a short period of time before Rocco took it back. Quietly making his way up was TC Ted Christopher in his #13 machine. Once Christopher was in second, Rocco did all that he could to hold him off but couldn’t stand up to the pressure. Christopher took the lead on lap thirty one and never looked back. And I was surprised to find out that this was Christopher’s first win since the 2006 Spring Sizzler.
The Late Models had a 100-lap event that had lots going on in it. With thirty starters taking the green it was a battle between the #00 of Patrick Townsend and the #11 of Mike Quintiliano. Quintiliano was able to secure the lead while Townsend fell back to second. On lap three the first caution came out. This was great news for Townsend who then got another chance to try taking the lead. And I know that it was kind of refreshing to see Townsend up front during the beginning stages of the event.
On the restart Townsend was able to get his nose out there and have a slim lead. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to hold on the lead. He slid back and got tangled up with a bunch of other cars and brought out the second yellow of the race on lap five. The caution ended up going a little bit longer than expected due to a short rain fall by mother nature.
The next restart brought another battle for the lead, which I found exciting. The battle this time was with Quintiliano and Scott Cook in the #99. For one lap they kept swapping the lead. Finally settling down in the lead was Cook. As the race went on Cook lapped traffic. And little did he realize that Michael O’Sullivan in the #13 was making his way up to the front.
As the race went on other drivers had taking there turns leading before the race winner took the lead. Those drivers were Jim Mavlouganes in the #01 and Jim Peterson in the #17. By the end of the one hundred laps it was O’Sullivan taking down the prestigious win.
The SK Lights saw rookie Alan Provost in the #23 taking the lead. As the front three settled down into position, forth back were battling side by side. During this time Joe Allegro Jr. in the #08 was challenging Provost for the lead. Provost was able to hold Allegro off until a restart on lap four. Allegro was able to hold a comfortable lead until lap eleven when it became a three way battle for the lead. The battle was between Allegro, Chris Matthews in the #29 and the #70 of Glen Reen. Matthews was able to win that battle and lead for four laps. On lap sixteen the yellow were brought out and that gave Reen the chance to take the lead. Reen was able to take the lead and show the field the way to the checkered flag.
In the Limited Late Models it was the #06 of Bill Davis visiting victory lane.
And rounding out the evening was the D.A.R.E Stocks. Taking down the win was Bill Dunn in the #97.
