PRESENTS---

April 2, Westfield, Ma- I know its been a while since I last wrote--- February to be exact. But I finally was able to catch up with a driver. Who is this driver you ask? Its Pat Townsend of Springfield, MA. Pat drives the number 70 Late Model at Stafford Motor Speedway. Here are some of the things that Pat and I discussed.

Talking with Pat I realized he was a born racer. He was always taking his “hot rod” to speed down the local streets. He had also said that he had worked on cars and loved it. He just knew that he just wanted to go racing. And when asked what his favorite part of it was he told me, “All of it.” There is one thing though, that he doesn’t like to do; that is interior tin work.

“We do all the work on the car. Our team doesn’t send the chassis out to be worked on. So it would be the interior tin work,” Pat stated.

For Pat and his family, racing is truly a family thing. Pat’s six year old daughter races Mondays at Stafford Motor Speedway in the Wild Thing Karts. I had asked him if it was hard watching her out there. He told me how it was hard at first, but it had gotten easier each time she went out there. Still, he worries about her.

“My wife said it to me this way, you will never know what its like to have a loved one out there.”

Pat had started to race back in 1994 at Riverside Park Speedway. He raced there until it closed down in 1999. And when most people will say that their greatest achievement is winning a championship or a race, that wasn’t Pat’s answer. His response was his marriage. He feels that his marriage is his biggest achievement because he spends so much time with his crew and because of the finances that goes into the car.

When he isn’t racing at Stafford Motor Speedway, you can catch him traveling to other tracks. After talking with him, I think that he has been to every track in New England. Or it seems like it.

I have to say after having this interview, Pat is definitely a race fan’s driver. So when you make your trip down to Stafford for a Friday night at the races, keep an eye out for him. I could see the fire in his eye and could see his passion for the sport.

When you meet him and ask him about it you can see it in him too. So good luck to Pat and his daughter this season at SMS!
